Local Author

Hi! I am publishing a children’s picture book, Mom’s Cloud and the Beach Adventure. I’d love to be able to have it become searchable in libraries, for families whom need mental health books. Could you provide any insight into the process. How do libraries in the area accept or request local authors. Before I publish, I would love to know the process to ensure my direction with self publish or indie press is aligned with libraries visions.

Also, I am assuming libraries love hardcover books for longevity, is this noted? Thanks!

First off, congratulations on your upcoming book!

Libraries often have a special process for local authors who live, work, or go to school in their area. The process depends on the library. Some of them have you drop off a copy of your book at the nearest branch. Some of them have you mail in a copy to their materials management department.

I’ve found the best way to figure out is to search “[library area] library authors.” For example, searching “Anne Arundel County library authors.” It’s sometimes helpful to add the word “local” in your search. Usually the information is located in About Us, Frequently Asked Questions, or with information about their selection process for their collection. When in doubt, you can always contact the library directly.

From what I understand of the ordering process, it’s much easier for libraries to order books when they’ve been published with a press (indie included). That doesn’t mean they won’t accept self published books! It just means they might be more picky with them. Most libraries will mention if they don’t accept self published books with their information for local authors.

Finally, hardback books are definitely much easier to keep circulating than softback books. I’ve also found they’re also easier to use during storytime!
